We will be carrying out road and pavement repairs in Forfar and Kirriemuir town centres early in the New Year.

Work in Forfar will be done throughout most of January 2026, while the work in Kirriemuir will happen during all of January and February.

Because we know this work will have a significant impact on residents, businesses and the wider public, we are providing this dedicated Engage Angus webpage to provide information and updates about both of these essential road and pavement repairs.

First, you'll find information about the Forfar roadworks, and then details on the work at Kirriemuir further down the page.

After that, we have included some general information, about public transport, taxis and where to find more details on recommended diversions.

This page is where we'll provide information and any updates as work progresses. Businesses requiring support can also contact Invest@angus.gov.uk and we will be happy to speak to them.

Forfar Roadworks:

Scheduled to start from Monday 12 January, these roadworks will be in Castle Street and The Cross, with some repairs to the pavement in Castle Street too. Local businesses chose this time of year as it was the least disruptive to their trade.

Work, carried out by Tayside Contracts, will be completed in three phases to try to minimise town centre disruption. The planned completion date, weather and any unforeseen circumstances permitting, is Friday 6 February.

We’ve included photographs of the current condition of the town centre roads and footways on this page. They make clear the need for these essential repairs and we appreciate your understanding for any inconvenience.

Work in Forfar carried out in three phases:

As mentioned the work in Forfar town centre will be done in three phases. The details are highlighted on this Forfar roadworks map and details of associated traffic/pedestrian management and restrictions are provided below:

Phase 1 (from Monday 12 January)

Road closed between Canmore Street and Queen Street, restricting the movement of pedestrians and vehicles for up to ten days.

Vehicles will not be permitted to exit onto Castle Street from Manor Street, or access Myre Road from Castle Street for the duration of this phase.

Phase 2 (from Monday 26 January)

Road closed at Castle Street restricting the movement of pedestrians and vehicles for up to five days.

Work at The Cross carried out with temporary traffic signals in place.

Traffic movement on West High Street and East High Street will be affected at The Cross, and there will also be no access to Castle Street, Myre Road and Queen Street from The Cross and Castle Street.

Alternative routes are encouraged during this phase, given the likelihood that this work will lead to town centre congestion. Vehicles will not be permitted to exit onto Queen Street from Castle Street for the duration of this phase.

Phase 3 (from Monday 2 February)

The movement of pedestrians and vehicles will be affected for up to five days, with work carried out under temporary traffic signals.

There is likely to be some impact on traffic movement from West High Street to East High Street. Access to and exit from Castle Street will be supported where practical and safe to do so.

Alternative town centre routes are advisable wherever possible during this final phase.

Kirriemuir Roadworks:

Road and pavement repairs will be carried out in Kirriemuir town centre beginning in January and ending in March 2026.

Scheduled to start on Monday 12 January, these works will be undertaken on Bank Street and High Street by Tayside Contracts. To try to minimise disruption in the town centre, the works will be done in two phases.

All work is expected to be complete by Friday 6 March, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Phase 1 – Now Complete

Phase 2 – High Street (Monday 2 to Friday 27 February)

Work will involve road and pavement resurfacing on High Street as shown on the Map of roadworks at High Street, Kirriemuir. High Street will be closed from the Post Office to past the junction with Glengate, restricting vehicle and pedestrian movement during this phase.

  • There will be no access from High Street to Tannage Brae or Glengate during these works.
  • Access to The Roods will be maintained for deliveries and drop-offs.
  • As with Bank Street, designated waiting areas will be provided for pedestrians and work staff will escort you through the area as required.
  • A signed diversion route will be in place for all vehicle traffic.

General Information:

Varying Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs)

These are the measures to allow for associated road restrictions, parking, loading, and no waiting to be put in place at different stages of works being carried out. They ensure the safety of the contractors and the public.

Information about these measures will be available on our Traffic Orders webpage. Notices will be displayed on the extent of the areas affected and this information will also be made available through the relevant communication channels, including local newspapers.

Closures/Diversions

Road Closures and associated diversion routes will be needed for works at Forfar and Kirriemuir. These will differ according to the phase of each of the projects, due to their complexities and extents and are publicised on our Roadworks and Road Closures webpage.

Taxi Information

Forfar: Locations where people can hail a Taxi in the town centre will change as the project progresses.

During Phase 1, taxis will only be available from outside the Royal Hotel and on West High Street alongside the Forfar Meffan Museum; in Phase 2 taxis will be available from a taxi rank alongside the Nationwide Building Society; and during Phase 3 taxis will be available from normal taxi rank locations.

Kirriemuir: Town centre taxi arrangements are not expected to be affected. However, any changes will be advised through the relevant communication channels.

Public Transport

Public transport will be affected in both Forfar and Kirriemuir town centres by the respective works.

Details about changes relating to necessary temporary bus stop closures and temporary relocations will be displayed on the relevant bus stops and you can find any relevant information on our Public Transport bus timetables webpage.

Car Parks

Car parks and parking provision is available within close proximity of the areas affected by the temporary restrictions to on-street parking in both town centres, and we thank you for your patience and understanding while these works are carried out.

Regrettably, Scottish Water have advised us that their emergency repairs on Roods are not yet complete and will continue on Friday (6 February).

This means that the temporary change to the diversion route for the road works on High Street, allowing for access via The Glengate to Reform Street and the Town Centre will also continue into Friday while the emergency closure of Roods remains in place.

Diversion signs in the town centre reflect this and, once Scottish Water has completed its emergency works, diversion signage at Roods will revert back to the original routes.

Businesses on Roods and within the town centre remain open and parking within town centre car parks is available as normal.

Slight changes to the planned bus service diversions to accommodate this emergency closure will continue into Friday.

Details on the bus timetables specific to journeys affected by this emergency closure can be found on our roads and road closures page.

Thank you once again for your appreciation and understanding while this additional unforeseen and unplanned work is carried out.

The diversion route for the road works on High Street will be temporarily changed to allow for access via The Glengate to Reform Street and the Town Centre while the emergency closure of The Roods is in place.

Diversion signs in the town centre will be amended to reflect this and, on the completion of Scottish Water's emergency works, The Roods the diversion signage will reverted back to the original routes.
