We are continuing to make improvements to our network of paths so that walking, wheeling and cycling are easier.
Our focus is now on National Cycle Network 1 (NCN1).
We are looking to upgrade sections of paths in Montrose and Ferryden, and we want to hear your thoughts.
This project focuses on a section of the NCN1 that runs the length of Ferryden along Southesk Place, West Terrace, Ogilvie Terrace and Burnside Place. We are also looking at the section along Wharf Street and Hill Street in Montrose. You can see maps outlining these areas in the Project areas section along with photographs of the current condition.
A previous active travel audit was delivered in 2018 via the Regional Transport Partnership (RTP) Tactran. This audit looked at what was needed to achieve a comprehensive and high quality active travel network in Montrose. One of the areas identified was River South Esk/ Ferryden to Central Montrose which included the Wharf Street and Burnside Place project areas being looked at here. Further concept design and feasibility work was carried out in 2022 which resulted in a report that provided further options. In 2024 both Angus Council and Sustrans Scotland were made aware of safety concerns from members of the public particularly on Wharf Street and Hill Street. Sustrans Scotland have subsequently provided Angus Council with funding to work on designs that focus on providing safe walking, wheeling and cycling paths on Wharf Street and Hill Street while addressing a substantial section in Ferryden.
How to have your say
This current project seeks to hear your thoughts and opinions of the proposed changes to the existing footway in Ferryden and also we'd like you to rank the 4 options provided for Wharf Street. You can do this via the survey on this page.
There are also opportunities to look over the design and speak to the project team in person on the 29th outside the Ballhouse and 31st March in Tesco from 10am to 3pm.
The information collated at this stage will help to inform the development of designs that reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community.
When the designs are finalised we will work with Sustrans Scotland (and other possible funders) to identify opportunities for further support that will allow for the construction of the new paths.
The consultation period will be open for 8 weeks from 24 March to 19 May 2025.
