October 2025 update

The construction of the rock groyne, adjacent to the ‘pipey’ on Montrose Beach, is progressing on site.

Initial site set up, including site surveys, the creation of a site compound, repairs to the golf course access track, the importation of the initial 500 tonnes of rock to a designated storage area, and the provision of temporary pedestrian access fences and signage, was completed by 8 October.

Challenging ground conditions were initially reported on 10 October, with running sand at a depth of 50cm below ground level. Difficulties were experienced when the foundation layer, comprising of a geotextile and reno mattress, were placed on the running sand layer, materials were sinking, even in low tide conditions.

Alternative options were discussed and investigated by the design consultant, the contractor and Angus Council engineers.

As a result, a preferred alternative option was agreed between all parties, involving the construction of a hybrid foundation solution - sections of reno mattress and geotextile wrapped rock, with construction levels amended locally to suit site conditions.

This change will result in a reduction in excavated material and will reduce the volume of sand available to infill behind the dunes. Options are currently being investigated into where best to place any excavated material. Proposals will be confirmed once the exact volume of material is established.

Montrose Bay has been experiencing neap tides, meaning low tides are particularly high, reducing the available time for working on the beach. The contractor continues to assess the tide levels and work within the time slots available.
