Arbroath segregated cycle routes
Consultation has concluded
Help us further improve active travel infrastructure at locations across Arbroath and make it easier for people to walk, wheel or cycle around the town.
About active travel
Active travel means travelling in physically active ways. For example, walking, wheeling or cycling.
Active travel has economic, social, health and environmental benefits. It is a key priority for the Scottish Government and Angus Council. The Scottish Government has committed to reduce car kilometres travelled by 20% by 2030.
Our proposals
We want to make it easier for people to travel around Arbroath by active travel means. We've been working with Amey to develop some key themes that were explored in previous studies that looked to create a coherent network of routes.
3 streets have been chosen that will see improvements carried out to existing active travel provisions. These streets are: -
- Westway
- Keptie Road
- Cairnie Road/Street.
The existing on road cycle lining will be removed from all 3 locations, and replaced with pedestrian forward alternatives.
On the Westway - a segregated 2 way cycle provision will be introduced alongside the SB footway for the entire length – existing traffic calming islands and markings will be removed to retain the existing usable carriageway width to minimise the affect on road users.
On Keptie Road - from Keptie Pond to Arbroath High School the existing NB footway will be widened to 2.5m, with on-street parking being retained. A segregated 2 way cycle provision will be introduced alongside the NB footway for the remainder of it’s length.
On Cairnie Street - a 2 segregated 2 way cycle provision will be provided along the east bound carriageway until Kinnaird Street. The existing footway will be widened from here until the road bridge to retain on street parking and deliveries to the local amenities.
Raised crossings both at junctions and across the Westway/Cairnie Street will prioritise pedestrian traffic in line with the new highway code.
You will see further information on the above options elsewhere on this page including maps and drawings.
